Synopsis

This film by renowned director Khyentse Norbu (The Cup, Travellers & Magicians) revolves around the story of Tenzin (Tsering Tashi Gyalthang), an ambitious and skeptical entrepreneur in Kathmandu, Nepal, whose tormenting dreams bring him to a lama who tells him that he has only seven days to live unless he can find a dakini who can change his fate.
The focus is on the traditional Himalayan respect for, and celebration of, feminine energy as the most supreme aspect of being. This energy is personified in tantric Buddhism by dakinis who may appear as mysterious living beings who give or take away our life force and guide or ruin our lives. Not everything is as it may appear however…

Direction

Khyentse Norbu began his film career in 1993, collaborating as a consultant to the Italian film director Bernardo Bertolucci (1941-2018) on the production of Little Buddha. He is the director of five films: La Copa (1999), a production that enjoyed great international acceptance; Travelers and Wizards (2003), his first feature film shot entirely in Bhutan; Vara: A Blessing (2013), filmed in Sri Lanka; Hema Hema: Sing Me a Song While I Wait (2017), filmed in Bhutan and winner of various international awards, which examines the relationship between illusion and reality and the transition phase between life and death; and Looking for a lady with fangs and a mustache (2019), his latest production.

Known in the Buddhist world as Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, Norbu brings to his films a profound and subtle mastery and understanding of Buddhist philosophy and practice. He studied and trained with some of the leading Tibetan Buddhist masters of the 20th century, graduated from secular schools in India and Europe, and teaches Buddhism on five continents.
